lyrics

7. THE NIGHT MARE | These days I lie awake at night. My eyes a waste, my pillow hot. And when at last I fall to sleep, I hear a distant rifle shot. My soul leaps up off a sweaty bed. I’m tangled in the mane of a fiery horse whose coat is black. Whose eyes are red. | I ride the night mare across a field of troubled dreams. Everything is something else. Nothing is what it seems. You can cover a lot of country without going anywhere. I should know, when the moon is low, I ride the night mare. | I used to sleep all through the night. If I had dreams - they had no harm. But through the years some walls break down. A sign from God or just false alarm. Never thought of myself as a lonely rider. I’d reach out and grab the dawn, but I don’t know where the darkness hides her. | CHORUS | The horse is just a symbol they say, of things I don’t want to think about. If that’s the case, why is it every night – somethin’ eats the grain that I leave out? And why do I long for the rising moon, when I know I’ll hear that rifle bark and that dark horse will be arriving soon? | CHORUS | W&M LYNN ADLER, LINDY HEARNE & HAL GREENWOOD © EARTHEN VESSEL MUSIC (ASCAP)
